FAQs: Art Grants

You can read answers to the most frequently asked questions about art project grants here.

What is an art grant?

An art grant is money given to individuals or organizations without the need of repayment. There are two main types of art grants: public grants, which come from cities, counties, and states, and private grants, which come from foundations, corporations, and NGOs. Each grant funder has its own specific objectives and missions, which are achieved by funding external projects. Art grants can provide a tremendous amount of support when it comes to realizing artistic projects.

Why should artists apply for art grants?

Applying for arts grants can require some work, but they are a powerful resource for funding a variety of artistic projects. These endeavors can range from exhibitions, performances, and events to the creation of new work, publications, and development opportunities such as residencies and workshops, or even research-based travel.

In addition, applying for a grant will help you to articulate your project by encouraging detailed project planning, and improve your application skills for future opportunities.

How do I choose the right art grant?

As you can see on the Artenda website, there are a multitude of art grants. Choosing the right grant depends on your artistic project. Since the application process can be time-consuming, careful selection is crucial. Make sure you choose art grants that correspond to your project, your practice, your profile, and your current career stage.

Moreover, a targeted approach can increase your chances of success. Well-known grants attract many applicants, so you may want to consider lesser-known and local opportunities which can also be of high quality. Consider applying to fewer grants, but spend more time creating very strong and comprehensive applications.

How do I apply for art grants?

Most open calls for art grants require artists to submit a comprehensive application, including a project description, budget plan, project timeline, project simulations, portfolio, and resume.
